Everything You Need To Know About Metal Roofing Underlayment

Metal roofing is steadily becoming one of the most popular roofing materials thanks to its durability, weather resistance, and energy efficiency capabilities. However, for it to work properly, they have to be installed with the proper metal roof underlayment. With that in mind, it’s in your best interest to learn as much as you can about metal roofing underlayments.

In this post, Blue Sky Roofing, one of the country’s premier roofing companies, discusses everything homeowners should know about metal roofing underlayment.

Purpose

One of the main purposes of metal roofing underlayments, especially if you live in such an area, is to prevent ice dams from forming on your metal roof. By adding a layer of ice guard to your metal roof underlayment, you can prevent ice from forming on your roof and causing any form of roofing damage that can lead to leaks.

Options

Homeowners typically have two options when it comes to metal roofing underlayment. The first is by using layers of felt or building paper to prevent leaks from entering the attic and providing a small amount of insulation. There’s usually a specific weight of felt paper and at times, may also require an extra slip sheet layer like red rosin paper. The slip sheet, meanwhile, prevents the metal from sticking to the felt paper during the installation.

The other option that roof installation experts use are polymer underlayment sheets, which are thinner and easier to work with compared to tar or rosin paper. These sheets are strong, waterproof and slick, allowing them to replace the other underlayment layers.

Installation

Installing metal roofing underlayment is a straightforward task, no matter what type you usee. Simply add strips of felt paper or polymer underlayment horizontally across your roof and make sure they overlap the layers by at least four inches. Afterwards, staple each strip at the ends and once the two parts of the roof meet in a valley, overlap the metal roof underlayment to get the job done. Alternatively, you can also just hire a roofing professional to do the job for you and prevent any costly mistakes.
