A series of storms recently ravaged the City of San Antonio and the surrounding areas. High winds, heavy rain and hail resulted in damage to residential properties across the area. The city council, however, came to the rescue after it rolled out a program for affected residents.
Blue Sky Roofing, one of the leading roofing companies in the local area, discusses the city’s Under 1 Roof program.
Free Roof for San Antonio Residents
The Under 1 Roof program of the city’s Neighborhood & Housing Services Department seeks to help residents whose roofs suffered significant damage because of past storms. Here, qualified homeowners will have their worn and damaged roofs fully replaced with new, energy-efficient asphalt roofs.
The Requirements
To be eligible for the free roof replacement program, an applying resident must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident and is the sole owner and occupant of the property situated within the city’s limits. The resident must also be current with his or her property taxes and has a gross income that must not exceed 80% of the area median income. The area of the home must be less than 1,700 square feet, with the roof not having a roofing material other than asphalt shingles.
Qualification and Approval
Once qualified for the Under 1 Roof program, the city will place a restrictive covenant, which the homeowner will sign. From there, he or she will be required to maintain the property as a homestead and continue to pay property taxes for five years from the time the project is completed.
